For many people, the mere thought of visiting the dentist can cause anxiety and fear. Dental anxiety is a common issue that affects millions of individuals, preventing them from seeking the oral care they need to maintain healthy teeth and gums. Fortunately, modern dentistry has made tremendous strides in addressing these fears and concerns, and one such solution is sedation dentistry. Bela Family Dentistry understands the importance of providing a comfortable and stress-free experience for our patients.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves using medications (delivered via IV, orally, or through local injections) to help patients relax during dental procedures. The main goal of sedation dentistry is to alleviate fear and anxiety, making it possible for patients to receive the necessary dental treatments they may have been avoiding.

The Different Levels of Sedation

IV Sedation: This sedation type is delivered through an IV and brings on a sleeplike state. You won’t feel anything during your procedure and will have no memory of it later. Many dental anxiety sufferers prefer this type of sedation for dental implant placement and other kinds of oral surgery because it combines benefits.

Oral Sedation: This popular choice also induces a sleeplike state, suppresses all sensations, and leaves you with no memory of your procedure. To get these benefits, all you need to do is swallow a pill that we’ll prescribe to you before treatment.

Nitrous Oxide: A colorless and odorless gas, nitrous oxide is administered through a mask. It induces relaxation and reduces anxiety during procedures. Its quick onset and recovery make it popular among dentists and patients alike.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Anxiety Reduction: Sedation dentistry is a game-changer for patients with dental phobia, enabling them to undergo treatments without overwhelming fear.

Pain Management: The use of sedatives can help manage discomfort during dental procedures, promoting a more positive experience.

Time-Saving: With sedation, dentists can often perform multiple treatments in one visit, reducing the number of appointments needed.

No Memory of the Procedure: For patients who experience moderate or deep sedation, they may have little to no memory of the procedure, alleviating future anxieties related to the treatment.

Improved Dental Health: By overcoming fear and anxiety, patients are more likely to seek regular dental care, leading to better oral health outcomes in the long run.
