EDGEFIELD IS A TOWN WITH HISTORY

Edgefield, to date, has produced ten of the 117 state governors who’ve held office in South Carolina. And that’s a fact we’re proud of here in this little town of ours. Once part of the Great Wagon Road from the North and later the Federal Road to the West, Edgefield has been a popular passing-through point for travelers for centuries.

That’s not to say Edgefield isn’t worth sticking around for. Plenty of those passers-by ultimately decided to stay and settle down in this idyllic little town. They went on to develop the very roads and landmarks we pass each day.

From Edgefield’s initial settlement to the Civil War and Great Migration, our community’s history is deep and complex. We happily celebrate it all, even historical mayhem like the Devil in Petticoats, as it has shaped the town we know and love today.

Here are five great things we love about our very own Edgefield, South Carolina.

WE’VE GOT CAROLINA MOON DISTILLERY.

Listed as #1 on TripAdvisor’s list of 8 things to do in Edgefield, Carolina Moon Distillery serves up handcrafted whiskey, history, and a good time. Carolina Moon is the only licensed micro-distillery in all of Edgefield County. Founders David Long and Cal Bowie are both Edgefield natives and proudly oversee every single batch made in the distillery.

Every step of the distilling process has been intentionally and thoughtfully put into place. They use only quality corn and fresh, local ingredients to create their products in this small-scale distillery. Each step is done by hand by the owners, from distilling to bottling and packaging. Stop by and take a free, ten-minute tour, and then sample their wares in the tasting room!

WE’VE GOT THE NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION WILD TURKEY CENTER.

Visit the Wild Turkey Center. The center provides resources for hunters, conservationists, and tourists alike. The center is the national headquarters of the National Wild Turkey Federation, an organization that, to date, has improved over 17 million acres of wildlife habitat since its inception in 1973. It’s one of the most respected conservation organizations of its kind.

Come visit to learn how to make different turkey calls. Inside the Winchester Museum, you’ll also learn how turkey calls have evolved over the past century And of course, learn about turkeys themselves with 3D dioramas and a virtual reality theater. The museum is the only one in the world dedicated solely to wild turkey restoration, hunting, and conservation.

Beyond the museum, you can take a habitat hike through the 100-acre Outdoor Education and wetland habitat. Schools can schedule trips to learn about wildlife management, outdoor skills, and bird biology.

WE’VE GOT THE TEN GOVERNORS RAIL TRAIL.

The trail is proudly named after the ten state governors who have hailed from Edgefield. Traversing alongside Slade Lake, this 0.9-mile paved trail features stone markers commemorating each of the ten governors. Learn the history of our great town while taking in fresh air and exercise.

The trail is a popular spot for dog owners to take their canine friends for a stroll. And you’ll spot families with little ones in carriages too. There’s also a fishing dock, ball field, and wooden trestle bridge to explore. If you prefer evening walks, you can safely do so under the after-dark lighting along the path.

WE’VE GOT MAGNOLIA SHADOWS EQUESTRIAN RESORT.

Whether you’re a traveling horseman passing through or looking for a quaint night’s stay, Magnolia Shadows Equestrian Resort is a unique place to visit right here in Edgefield.  The main house, a historic plantation home built in 1895, has been completely restored and named after the magnolia trees that sit alongside its neatly manicured pastures and gardens.

This bed and breakfast is a perfect stop for those on their way to popular nearby equestrian venues in Aiken, Columbia, Augusta, and Lexington for polo, fox hunting, and racing events. Magnolia Shadows offers horse boarding for its guests with all the amenities you could ask for.

Magnolia Shadows can be reserved for celebrations such as weddings, receptions, honeymoons, anniversaries, hunt meets, and charity fundraisers. The stunning landscape would make any special day a memorable one.
