If you have extreme pain coming from deep inside one of your teeth, there are a few possible reasons. One is that you have a cavity and will need a filling. Another is that an infection has broken through your tooth enamel and spread into the pulp chamber, the part of the tooth where living tissues including nerves—which give your tooth sensation—and blood vessels are located. If your pulp chamber is infected, a simple filling won’t fix the problem. At the same time, it doesn’t mean that the tooth is in such poor condition that it must be extracted. With years of experience providing endodontics, our team can eradicate your pain and infection with root canal therapy rather than removing the entire tooth. Saving a Dying Tooth from Extraction
Advanced imaging technology enables us to quickly identify root canal issues. Once we do so, we’ll set up an appointment for you to return to our office to have endodontic treatment. Before your surgery, you may have already suffered severe pain, so our first task is to alleviate your discomfort. We can provide various sedation options to ensure your treatment is as smooth and pain-free as possible. We not only consider your condition when selecting sedation, but also your degree of dental anxiety, if applicable. After you’re sedated, we access the infected pulp chamber by making an opening in the crown of the affected tooth. Inside we clear away all of the infected tissue, disinfect the area, then broaden and reshape the root canals, the slender channels in your tooth roots for which the treatment is named. We fortify the tooth by filling these channels with a unique dental material called gutta-percha. In most cases we then top the tooth with a new crown—conveniently fabricated during the same appointment with our own milling machine—to keep it strong through many more years of chewing and biting!

After Your Tooth Extraction
After a wisdom tooth extraction or after a tooth extraction that didn’t also include a dental implant, you can heal more quickly and minimize your risk of developing a dry socket by following established aftercare guidelines. Once a tooth is extracted, an empty space is left in the bone where the tooth roots used to be. This is known as a tooth socket. As part of the body’s natural healing process, a blood clot typically forms over an empty tooth socket. If this doesn’t happen, or does happen but the clot becomes dislodged, you can experience severe pain from the exposed nerves and bone. Avoid vigorous activities for a few days, don’t drink anything through a straw, gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater, and avoid touching the extraction site with your toothbrush. If you begin to experience any symptoms of dry socket, including intense pain at the extraction site that radiates to your eyes and forehead, foul breath or a foul taste in your mouth or a noticeably empty socket, contact our office and we’ll be able to get you back on track to a healthy smile.
