THERE’S A LOT TO KNOW ABOUT INVISALIGN.

Invisalign, the transparent aligner system, has helped millions of adults and teens achieve straight, even teeth and properly aligned bites discreetly. However, there is still a lot of misinformation and some outright myths surrounding this orthodontic device. Bela Family Dentistry of Newberry is here to set the record straight by busting common myths and presenting the true facts about Invisalign.

MYTH: YOU CAN ONLY GET INVISALIGN FROM AN ORTHODONTIST.

Fact: An orthodontist or a qualified, trained dentist, can set you up with Invisalign. There is no need to make a separate appointment or go out of your way to an orthodontist’s office to get straight teeth with Invisalign. We can take care of everything at our dental office in Newberry, SC.

MYTH: INVISALIGN IS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE INTERNET.

Fact: There are many “imposter” products out there comparing themselves to Invisalign. Most of these products are available through the internet or via mail order. Don’t be fooled. These aligners are not the same as Invisalign.

With Invisalign, your dentist takes precise measurements of your mouth and has your aligner specially created just for you. If adjustments are needed, your dentist takes care of the issue using their training and experience. With internet products, you never actually see a dentist or orthodontist, and you really don’t know what you’re getting.

Do-it-yourself (DIY) orthodontics is a bad idea and may even harm your mouth. DIY is a good idea when changing a tire or putting in new carpet. It’s not so great when it comes to dentistry and orthodontics.

MYTH:  INVISALIGN WILL CAUSE YOU TO TALK FUNNY.

Fact: This is simply false. One of the benefits of Invisalign is that your dentist ensures an accurate, comfortable fit. They will make certain that your aligners do not interfere with your speech.

MYTH: INVISALIGN IS ONLY FOR MINOR COSMETIC ISSUES.

Fact: In reality, Invisalign can help correct both cosmetic and functional orthodontic problems. In fact, Invisalign can do almost everything that traditional braces can. There are some cases where a patient is not a good candidate for Invisalign and needs a more conventional orthodontic solution, but these situations are rare.

A few of the problems that Invisalign can likely treat include crooked teeth, crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites. Ask your dentist to find out more.

MYTH: FOOD WILL GET STUCK IN YOUR INVISALIGN ALIGNER.

Fact: Nope. This one is false, simply because you remove your aligner whenever you eat. While you still need to clean your aligners, you won’t suffer from “salad smile” like you would with metal braces.

MYTH: YOU CAN REMOVE YOUR ALIGNER TO SLEEP.

Fact: No. It is very important that you wear your aligner while you sleep. Ideally, most patients need to wear Invisalign for 22 hours each day for the best results. Since we spend about one-third of our lives asleep, you definitely need to have your aligner in place at bedtime.

MYTH: PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO TELL YOU’RE WEARING INVISALIGN.

Facts: One of the key features of Invisalign aligners is their transparency. Since they contain no metal parts, the aligners are very discreet and difficult to notice. It is unlikely that anyone will spot your aligner unless they are very close to your face and actively looking for it. Of course, a passionate kiss will likely reveal its presence.
