Bela Family Dentistry is dedicated to giving you the smile you’ve always wanted. Because National Smile Month is May 16 to June 16, here are five tips for keeping your smile healthy and bright during National Smile Month:

  1. Practice good oral hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time, using fluoride toothpaste. Additionally, floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth. This will help prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.
  2. Maintain a balanced diet: A healthy diet is not only good for your overall well-being but also for your oral health. Limit sugary and acidic foods and beverages, as they can contribute to tooth decay. Instead, opt for a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy products. These foods provide essential nutrients for strong teeth and gums.
  3. Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is not only essential for your overall health but also beneficial for your oral health. Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria in your mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay. It also helps maintain saliva production, which plays a crucial role in neutralizing acids and protecting your teeth.
  4. Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption: Tobacco use, including smoking and chewing tobacco, can significantly impact your oral health. It increases the risk of gum disease, tooth loss, oral cancer, and bad breath. Similarly, excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to oral health problems. Limit or avoid these substances to maintain a healthy smile.
  5. Visit your dentist regularly: Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are vital for maintaining good oral health. Schedule appointments with your dentist at least twice a year, or as recommended by your dental professional. They can detect any dental issues early on, provide professional cleanings, and offer personalized advice for maintaining a healthy smile.

Remember, these tips should be followed not just during National Smile Month but throughout the year to ensure long-term oral health and a bright smile. Contact your local Bela Family Dentistry office to talk about getting the smile you’ve always wanted and maintaining great oral health.
